Due to the morphology of the ground, Kalo Chorio of Larnaca maintains a varied flora. Presented below is the flora of each area as this is described in the book of Kalo Chorio* (p.11):
The flora of the hills The hills are mainly covered by brushwood. The bushy vegetation is limited and the trees that grow there (mainly olive trees) are very few. The main plants that one encounters on the hills include thymes, rock phagnalons and sage-leaf rockroses. There are also some endemic plants such as the Cyprus Bartsia and the Golden Drops. At the foothills of the hills one can find herbaceous plants without woody branches, wild olive trees, asparaguses and azaroles.
Flora at the fields What presents an even greater interest is the vegetation found at both cultivated and uncultivated fields. Wild species grow in the spring mingling with wheat and barley, this way creating a multi-coloured layer. In the fields one mainly encounters cornflowers and various wild flowers such as garland chrysanthemums, red poppies, bunch-flowered Narcissuses, anemones and various types of orchids. Unfortunately, the excessive use of fertilisers, which destroys the tubers of the plants, as well as drought, have significantly reduced the growth of wild species in the fields of the community.
