The imposing statue of Gregoris Afxentiou stands outside the Community Park and opposite the residence of his sister Chrystallou.
It is an imposing statue made of metal, whereas it stands on a marble base. The unveiling ceremony of the statue was held on the 16th of January 1994. Since then, every year on the 3rd of March, which is the date the hero sacrificed himself, an event dedicated to his sacrifice is held at the Monument. Following is a distinctive extract from the book of Kalo Chorio* which refers to the story of the construction of the statue in the village:
"The reason the statue was placed here is both simple and touching. Before 1974, there used to be a bust outside the hero’s house in his village Lysi. However, his bust was destroyed by the Turks. Therefore, this statue was made and placed outside his sister’s house in Kalo Chorio with the promise that once Lysi is liberated the statue will be transferred and placed there"* (p.36).
